"How long does SEO take?" is the question we hear most. The honest answer is that it depends on your market, your website and your competitors. But the work follows a predictable pattern. Here's what a typical first six months looks like for a local business, and why SEO is ongoing rather than a one-off project.
Month 1: Audit, tracking and plan
Before changing anything, we need to know where you stand:
- Tracking: conversions in Google Analytics 4, Search Console, and call tracking where useful, so we can measure leads, not just traffic
- Technical audit: indexing, speed, mobile, redirects, structure (see our technical SEO checklist)
- Keyword research: the searches that bring customers, by service and area
- Competitor review: who ranks, why, and how strong their authority is
- Google Business Profile review for local businesses
The output is a prioritised plan: what to fix, what to create and in what order.
Month 2: Fix the foundations
Technical problems are fixed first, because they limit everything else: pages that aren't indexed, slow mobile pages, broken links, duplicate titles. Key service pages get their first on-page optimisation: titles, headings, content gaps and calls to action.

Sometimes there's quick movement here, especially if technical problems were holding the site back. Often there isn't yet, and that's normal.
Month 3: Content and local signals
- New or improved service and location pages
- The first supporting articles in your content plan
- Google Business Profile updates, posts and a review plan
- Consistent citations on the main directories
By the end of month three, you should usually see early signs: more impressions in Search Console, better positions for some longer, more specific searches, and more profile views.
Months 4–5: Authority and expansion
With the foundations in place, the focus moves to authority and coverage:
- Earning links and mentions from relevant websites (see Links & Citations)
- Expanding content to more services, areas and questions
- Improving pages that are close to page one
- Testing changes to titles and calls to action to improve clicks and conversions
This is often when rankings for competitive terms start to move, and leads begin to follow.
Month 6: Review and reset the strategy
Six months in, there's real data. We review:
- Which pages and searches are bringing leads
- Where you're close to the top three and need a push
- Where competitors are still ahead, and why
- What to double down on and what to drop
The plan for the next six months is built from those results.
Why strategy keeps changing
SEO isn't "set and forget":
- Competitors keep working. Rankings you win need to be defended.
- Google keeps changing. Updates shift what ranks, and AI answers are changing how people search.
- Your business changes. New services, new areas, seasonal demand.
- Data shows what works. Each month tells us which pages and topics bring customers, so the plan gets sharper over time.
That's why our monthly plans have a three-month minimum and then continue month to month. The first three months build the foundations; the months after are where the compounding happens.
When to add paid ads
If you need leads this month, SEO alone is too slow. Many local businesses run Google Ads while SEO builds, then reduce ad spend as organic leads grow.
